2021 Student Research Summit: Call for Papers

On March 5, 2020 the Georgetown Global Cities Initiative will convene its annual Student Research Summit where students from across University come together to celebrate urban and place-based research and build interdisciplinary networks.

All undergraduate and graduate students at all schools and all campuses are encouraged to submit a presentation proposal before January 11th, 2021, using this online application form

For more information on the summit agenda and to RSVP to the event, see here

Presentation proposals may draw on any student inquiry initiated in courses, engagements, thesis projects or dissertations at Georgetown. A selection committee of faculty and students will select final presentations and provide coordination assistance to student presenters in advance of the summit.  We are delighted to confirm that the lead respondent to presentations will be GGCI visiting fellow Angela Glover Blackwell.  You can learn more about Ms. Blackwell here.

We are seeking unpublished or ongoing research projects exploring interdisciplinary urban challenges. Students may submit work from previous semesters. These are projects or papers that you may have developed within a class or research activities you are advancing for an undergraduate or graduate thesis. They may also be reflections you have generated as a component of external engagements or service projects. Students need not submit a fully-completed paper to be eligible to apply, however, we expect all applications to summarize either completed, or substantially completed projects.

We invite student submissions to address one of the themes listed below.  Papers covering other topics will also be considered.

Theme #1: Cities and Public Health

Theme #2: Social Equity Across the Metropolitan Landscape

Theme #3: Forces of Change in Global Urbanization

The Summit timeline is as follows:

December 2nd, 2020: Call for Submissions opens.

January 11th, 2021: Submission deadline.

First week of February, 2021: Students are notified.

March 5th, 12pm EST, 2021: Third Georgetown Global Cities Student Research Summit

March 12th, 2021: Invitation to students to serve in the Georgetown Global Cities Scholars program.

Among those who present, the authors of the most promising research projects will be offered the opportunity to participate in the first cohort of the Georgetown Global Cities Scholars Program. This program will allow for students to further develop their research for publication and also offer the opportunity to work with other Georgetown faculty on ongoing faculty research projects.  All students interested in the Scholars Program are encouraged to submit a presentation proposal.
