The Georgetown Global Cities Initiative and the State and Local Government Policy and Law invite you to a conversation with the Mayor of the City of Miami, Francis X. Suarez, who has charted an ambitious agenda for Miami as a global city leveraging location, culture and human capital to model city strategies of the future. The interview will be conducted by Sheila R. Foster, the Scott K. Ginsburg Professor of Urban Law and Policy and Professor of Public Policy.
Mayor Suarez will discuss Miami’s trade and diplomatic relations with Latin America, its cutting-edge efforts to foster climate resilience, and his own role as a member of the Global Commission on Climate Adaptation. He will discuss his plans to make Miami an innovation center for technology entrepreneurship, expand the City’s transportation trust fund, enforce its anti-redlining regulations, and its role in a recent Supreme Court case, Bank of America v. City of Miami, 581 U.S. (2017) which established the standing of cities to sue lenders under the Fair Housing Act for predatory loan practices. Mayor Suarez will assume the Presidency of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in 2022.
