This workshop, which is part of the Celebrating Commons Scholarship Conference, will focus on housing through the lens of the commons framework, specifically examining community land trusts (CLTs) in action. It will be co-led by Amanda Huron, Associate Professor at the University of the District of Columbia and author of the new book, "Carving out the Commons: Tenant Organizing and Housing Cooperatives in Washington D.C.", and Paula Segal, senior staff attorney in the Equitable Neighborhoods Practice at the Community Development Project in New York City. In this hands-on workshop, participants will first learn about the challenges of creating CLTs in three very different urban contexts: New York City, Baltimore, and Rio de Janeiro. They will then work in small groups to puzzle out how to address the governance challenges of CLTs in different scenarios. Participants will leave the workshop with a deeper understanding of how CLTs operate, the challenges of governance, and how the idea of the commons relates to the on-the-ground reality of collective governance and ownership of land and housing.
