Ceasefire: Bridging the Urban-Rural Divide

At a time when our political debates are becoming increasingly heated, the Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service (GU Politics) is seeking to turn the rhetorical temperature down by launching a new event series called “Ceasefire.”

The Ceasefire series will bring together political practitioners and thought-leaders from very different perspectives to discuss a major challenge facing our country with a goal of fostering better understanding and identifying common values. Prioritizing dialogue over debate, Ceasefire speakers will come together to share the values that inform their perspectives with a goal of identifying shared motivations.

The inaugural Ceasefire event will feature former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms (D) and former Congressman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) for a conversation on one of the most profound political divisions facing our country today — the urban/rural divide.

Motivated by GU Politics' mission of pushing through our political polarization by popping the filter bubbles that have isolated too many of us from different perspectives, we hope that the Ceasefire series will help people to think more deeply about their own positions and those of others, and illuminate a path toward a healthier politics.

This event will be co-sponsored by College Democrats, College Republicans, and the Bipartisan Coalition with support from the Georgetown Global Cities Initiative.
