Building Urban Food Systems in Low & Middle-Income Countries
Speaker: Marie Ruel, Ph.D.,Director, Poverty, Health and Nutrition Division, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)
Dr. Ruel will provide a summary of why and how diets are changing in urban areas of low- and middle-income countries and briefly describe the new research program “Urban food systems for better diets, nutrition and health” that IFPRI is embarking on to support policy makers in tackling these issues and in building food systems that provide healthy and affordable diets for the urban poor.
Marie T. Ruel has worked for close to 30 years on policies and programs to alleviate poverty, food insecurity and malnutrition in low- and middle-income countries. She has published extensively on topics related to maternal and child nutrition, the development and validation of nutrition indicators, and on the linkages between agriculture, nutrition, and health.
Since joining IFPRI in 1996, Dr. Ruel has led the Multi-Country Program on Challenges to Urban Food and Nutrition and the Global Regional Project on Diet Quality and Diet Changes of the Poor. Prior to joining IFPRI she was head of the Nutrition and Health Division at the Institute of Nutrition of Central America Panama/Pan American Health Organization. Dr. Ruel has served on many international expert committees, including the National Academies of Science, and currently leads CGIAR’s portfolio of research on integrated programs and policies.
Dr. Ruel received her Ph.D. in International Nutrition from Cornell University and her Masters in Health Sciences from Laval University (Canada).
