The Georgetown Urban Health Collaborative was established by the Department of International Health in 2017. The collaborative is designed to bring together faculty who are committed to employing their social epidemiology experience to address health challenges in urban environments. The collaborative looks towards the future of urban health, primarily in low- and middle-income countries, through a specific focus on:
· Rising inequality in healthcare access, quality, and outcomes in urban areas
· The dual burden of infectious and non-communicable diseases in urban areas
· The complex, cross-sectoral challenges of addressing social and environmental determinants of urban health
Over the past few years, the collaborative has worked to meet these objectives through nurturing partnerships and highlighting both international and domestic research. The collaborative has well- established relationships with academic partners in sub-Saharan Africa and with the Georgetown Global Cities Initiative. The Georgetown Urban Health Collaborative regularly hosts exceptional domestic and international speakers, creating awareness and forming an increasing network of urban health specialists. In 2021, the collaborative is working on educational and research projects with partners in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean.
