The North Jakarta Project: Reconciling People and Place
ASST 5718: A 3-Credit Graduate Practicum in Jakarta, Indonesia
Summer Semester: June 1 – July 3, 2026
This graduate-level practicum explores the practice of urban planning through applied problem-solving in Jakarta, Indonesia. This 3-credit course is taught in a 5-week format on-site in Jakarta. Students engage in urban analysis, interdisciplinary synthesis, and formulation of a comprehensive urban development strategy. Coursework is hands-on and participatory, emphasizing methods of documentation, analysis, and effective communication associated with urban planning practice. Students will make final presentations to representatives of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta.
The North Jakarta Project encompasses diverse neighborhoods along Jakarta’s waterfront that are grappling with intersecting challenges of land subsidence, sea level rise, new infrastructure investments, informal land tenure, and unique cultural resources, among many other urban pressures. Students will be working in close collaboration with government representatives in the articulation of a place-based urban development strategy.
The course will coordinate its work with the World Bank Group, the Embassy of the Netherlands, and numerous local organizations and stakeholders.
Registration Instructions
This course requires a 5-week residency in Jakarta between June 1 and July 3, 2026. Students must be actively enrolled in a graduate program at Georgetown University. Lodging will be coordinated by Georgetown, but travel and lodging expenses are the responsibility of the student. This course is listed in the Asian Studies department as ASST-5718.

Wendy Haryanto, Research Fellow and Executive Director, Jakarta Property Institute
Wendy Haryanto is Executive Director, Jakarta Property Institute, and Research Fellow at Georgetown University's Asia Pacific Campus in Jakarta. Wendy brings more than 30 years of experience in property and urban development. She is the former Director at Procon/Savills Indonesia, where she oversaw master planning, development strategy, market segmentation, investor relations, and operations. In addition to serving as a Research Fellow at Georgetown University, Wendy is actively engaged in education and knowledge-sharing on urban issues as a Lecturer at the National University of Singapore Cities Program and as an Industry Advisory Board member at Monash University Indonesia.
